BUSTHINK: A Bridge Between Entrepreneurship and Integration for Elderly Immigrants

The BUSThink project, within the Erasmus Plus program in the field of adult education, represents an innovative initiative aimed at supporting the economic and social integration of elderly immigrants through entrepreneurship. Coordinated by CarpoACE, together with European partners SOLIS SRLS and PFE, the project has carried out significant activities in recent months. A major milestone was the organization of focus groups in Malaga (Spain), Modena (Italy), and Brussels (Belgium), which involved a total of 60 participants and highlighted the challenges and opportunities that migrants face in their attempts to start new entrepreneurial activities.

Understanding Motivations and Challenges

One of the most relevant aspects that emerged from the focus groups was the desire of elderly immigrants to find economic stability and maintain their cultural identity in the new context and host country. This desire, fueled by the necessity of integration, often translates into a strong motivation to undertake entrepreneurial activities. However, language barriers, recognition of credentials, and age discrimination constitute significant obstacles. These challenges not only complicate the path to entrepreneurship but also influence how these individuals perceive themselves and are perceived in their new communities.

The Crucial Role of Training

Entrepreneurial training emerges as a key element for the success of elderly immigrants. Participants demonstrated a positive and proactive attitude towards acquiring new skills, recognizing the importance of understanding the local market and developing effective business plans. However, it is evident that training programs must be tailored to the specific needs of this group, considering factors such as language barriers and cultural differences.

The Importance of a Holistic Approach

The members of BUSTHINK are aware of the importance of a holistic approach in addressing the entrepreneurial challenges of elderly immigrants. This means not only providing technical training but also creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and values the unique experiences and skills of these individuals. Economic integration is closely linked to social integration, and entrepreneurial success can significantly contribute to the construction of a new positive identity in the host country.

Future Reflections and Sustainability

Looking to the future, it is essential to consider the sustainability of initiatives like BUSThink. Projects of this type must go beyond the initial funding period and aim to create permanent structures that can continue to support elderly immigrants. This includes the creation of local mentor networks, the implementation of policies favorable to integration, and the continuous adaptation of training programs to market and community developments.

The BUSThink project represents a model of how entrepreneurship can act as a bridge between economic and social integration for elderly immigrants. The lessons learned from this initiative offer valuable insights into how to design future interventions that are not only effective but also sustainable and inclusive. The key to success lies in the ability to listen and respond to the specific needs of these individuals, recognizing their value and potential as active and contributing members of our societies.

BUSThink invites us to reflect on the importance of creating opportunities that not only facilitate economic integration but also promote a sense of belonging and dignity for all individuals, regardless of their age or origin.
